About Jobs Detail

Job Responsibilities

  • Work with the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Development Officer to secure funds from corporations, mid-sized businesses, foundations, and government sources.
  • Identify, research, solicit corporations, mid-sized businesses, foundations, and government sources of funding.
  • Lead proposal development and grant review processes.
  • Source proposal requirements and submission deadlines and maintain report deadline calendar.
  • Meet with all departments as required to develop proposals, maintain and compile reporting data.
  • Write, edit, proofread, and submit applications and budgets. Coordinate preparation, assembly, and delivery of proposal documents.
  • Follow up reports to Food Bank, corporations, businesses, foundations, and government funders as required.
  • Participate in and support Food Bank special events.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Communications or Professional Writing and five years related experience in grant writing; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of Word Processing software; Desktop Publishing; Spreadsheet software; Accounting software; Development software; Internet software; Project Management software and Database software.
  • Excellent grant writing, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Take initiative to make recommendations, identify and resolve issues. Proven ability to meet critical deadlines and attain goals.
  • Valid drivers’ license.

About History

The Food Bank recently marked its 30th Anniversary. When Pittsburgh's great steel mills began closing in the 1980's the Food Bank came into existence as a way to help out the thousands of families suddenly without resources and at risk of hunger. Today, the Food Bank serves populations urban and rural, working, retired, of all ages and economic backgrounds. Below are some highlights from the Food Bank's journey that began in June of 1980.

A Brief Chronology of Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank

  1. June 2011

    The Food Bank celebrates its 30th Anniversary.

  2. February 2007

    On a monitoring visit to the Food Bank, Matt Coatar of Feeding America calls GPCFB "the conscience of the network."

  3. Fall 2006

    The Food Bank receives two "Hunger's Hope" Awards from Feeding America for its new Choosing Healthy Options Program, and its advocacy work.

  4. June 2006

    The Food Bank celebrates its 25th Anniversary on National Hunger Awareness Day at a dinner at the Hilton.

  5. January 2006

    The Campaign to End Hunger was launched with a year-long media campaign to raise awareness about hunger and encourage advocacy at all levels.

  6. October 2005

    The Food Bank initiates Produce to People, a Saturday direct distribution program to low-income communities. More than 35,000 pounds of food are distributed on the first Saturday.

  7. 2005

    The Food Bank receives the Congressional Hunger Center's Victory Against Hunger Award.

  8. June 2005

    The Food Bank initiates the National Hunger Awareness Day Awards honoring outstanding community partners of the Food Bank for their continuing support.

About Donors

Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank is indebted to our community partners who donate or help us purchase food, sponsor our events, and help underwrite the cost of Food Bank operations.

Foundation grants, corporate sponsorship, and individual donations make up the lion’s share of the funds that support the Food Bank. Government support makes up only 29% of the Food Bank’s budget.
